The last three Republic days I have been in India, I have noticed that it coincides with the peak of the Palani pilgrimage. It is puzzling to understand that when you are in pursuit of something so great and so spiritual, you fail to see the little things that are so important. People who take part in the Palani Yatra to go see Lord Muruga take a lot of effort in walking for days and living & sleeping on the roads. However, the amount of mindless littering of plastic cups & plates is reprehensible.

The very first year, my husband, seeing this happen, created these flex posters and hung 20 of them in different places along the road. The very next day, hardly a few remained up, as people took it down to use it as sleeping mats!!!!
For not being able to withstand the plastic litter on both sides of the road, the only solution we thought was to get down and pick up the waste ourselves & that’s what we did on Republic days, after the official celebrations.

Due to this covid situation, we are all at home on this Republic Day and the trees and nature of Alangiyam & Palani roads will be thankful to the considerable reduction of plastics and waste as the number of people walking to Palani has significantly dropped too.
